Top Fall and Winter Home Renovation Design Trends in Canada in 2025

Now that we are getting closer to Winter in Canada, home design trends have changed more in favour of warmer colours and other renovation trends related to staying and feeling warm during the long Winter months of a typical Canadian Winter. Here’s some of the top trends we have noticed lately.

1. Warm, Earthy & Moody Colour Palettes.

There’s been a shift lately away from cool greys and stark whites toward richer, warmer tones: deep browns, mochas, chestnut, saddle leather hues, forest/olive greens, and wine/burgundy. In addition, accent walls or full colour-drenching (walls, trim, ceiling in same tone) are gaining traction.

These palettes help homes feel cozy and grounded, which is important in Ontario’s Fall and Winter seasons when daylight is shorter and warmth is visually needed

2. Layered Lighting.

Gone are the times when people would just rely on one overhead light to light up their rooms in their house. Instead designers are layering lighting, such as floor lamps, sconces, and table lamps to boost ambiance.

3. Layered Textures.

In addition to layered lighting, layered textures, such as boucle, chunky knits, woven wall hangings, and raw stone finishes have become all of the rage among popular home designers. In effect, this creates a more tactile, cozy feel.

4. Biophilic Home Design.

Essentially the idea with the biophilic home design is to bring the outside in, by using a mix of outdoor plants and even wallpaper with plants on it to do this as effectively as possible. For instance, placing palm trees or other tropical plants in your Living Room or Office can help liven up the space greatly in the Winter in Canada to help lift your mood if you are feeling depressed.

5. Re-Mixed Earth Tones.

Classic autumn tones are still popular, such as caramel, terracotta, and chestnut, but they are being re-mixed by being paired with unexpected accents, such as stormy teal, deep aubergine, and mustard gold. These moody contrasts create warmth, while keeping things fresh and modern.

6. Rich, Warm Wood.

Warm wood finishes pair well with sophisticated colours, such as burgundy and brass hardware.

7. Reclaimed Materials.

8. High Tech Comfort.

New high-tech smart technology, such as voice-controlled lighting and heated floors are being used for greater convenience and eco-efficiency. In fact, electric heated floors can be 25-30% more energy efficient than traditional heating systems for certain parts of your home, such as bathrooms and kitchens, and can also sell homes 6-8% faster at higher selling prices! However, there are some drawbacks to electric heating systems, such as not having a way to heat these areas during power outages. Therefore, it might be best to have a hybrid heating system in place where you have both a heat pump and electric floor heating system installed if it gets very cold in your house where you live in Canada. And in some locations in Canada where there are frequent power outages for long periods of time it might even be smart to invest in a gas-powered generator, so you don’t have to keep on spending money on renting hotel rooms or staying with your relatives every time the power goes out.

9. Statement Piece Fireplaces.

Instead of just having a regular minimalist fireplace, more luxurious statement piece type fireplaces have been installed lately to really stand out in people’s living rooms. For instance, fireplaces with oversized proportions, bold stone surrounds, and sculptural mantels have become more popular. And why not, if you are going to be spending so much time in your Living or Family Room during the Winter watching Netflix, you might as well enjoy it in style and with greater comfort! However, modern electric fireplaces are also still very popular, they have just become a bit more elaborate and fancy, such as floor-to-ceiling electric fireplaces, and see-through electric fireplace designs that seamlessly flow from one room to another.
